• Potassium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood pressure and to normal functioning of the nervous system and muscles.
• Potassium is the antagonist of sodium in the regulation of fluid balance. Together with sodium (the sodium-potassium pump), potassium plays a crucial role in regulating the electrolyte and fluid balance between the external and internal fluids of the cell and, among other things, in regulating blood pressure.
• The sodium in salt binds excess fluid in the body. Excess fluid retention often manifests itself in, for example, eye bags and swelling in the fingers and ankles. Potassium counteracts the harmful effects of salt and prevents excessive fluid from accumulating in the body, making you feel lighter.
• Too little potassium intake may impair performance and manifest as decreased muscle strength or cramps. Profuse sweating, for example during sports, increases the loss of potassium from the body.
• Potassium (K) belongs to the so-called to macrominerals. Its daily intake recommendation is 3100 mg for women and 3500 mg for men.
• Potassium can be obtained from milk and grain products, vegetables, bananas and citrus fruits.
